According to the American Census Bureau , the total area of the city is 43.0 km², including 34.7 km² - land and 8.3 km² - body of water.

According to the 2000 census [1] , there were 48,688 residents in the city, 20,530 separate households and 12,851 families. The population density, therefore, was 1401.8 people per km². The racial makeup of the city was as follows: 86.49% were white; 5.02% - African Americans; 0.46% are Native Americans; 1.15% are Asians; 0.05% are natives of the Pacific Islands; 2.80% - representatives of other races and 4.03% - representatives of two or more races. 1.89% of the population defined their origin as Spanish (Latin American).
Of the 20,530 households at the census date, 27.1% had children; 46.3% were married couples. 32.4% of households were formed by single people, while in 14.6% of households a single person over 65 lived. The average number of people in a household was 2.33; The average family size is 2.99 people.
