Biography

Born into a noble family; his grandfather Ivan Grigoryevich Mitrofanov (1795—?) rose to the rank of collegiate assessor by 1828 and in 1830 was included in the 3rd part of the Saratov noble genealogy book. Father, Pavel Ivanovich Mitrofanov (1831-1895) - justice of the peace; mother, Sofya Ivanovna, was the daughter of artillery colonel Ivan Antonovich Tomich.

Born on November 21 ( December 3 ), 1873 . He graduated in 1896 from the Department of History and Philology of St. Petersburg University ; during training in 1895 he received a gold medal for an essay on the topic: "The Life and Political Activities of Kourion the Younger" [1] . He was left at the university to prepare for a professorship. From October 1, 1898, on the proposal of I.F. Annensky, he was accepted to the post of teacher of the Russian language of the Imperial Nikolaev Tsarskoye Selo Gymnasium . Since that time, the friendship of Mitrofanov and Annensky began.

In 1901-1904, on a foreign trip, P. P. Mitrofanov collected materials for his dissertation, which he had been working on since the late 1890s. He visited the archives of Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Vienna, Darmstadt, Dresden and Paris. After returning to Russia, he continued his teaching career: from February to August 1904 he taught history at the 1st St. Petersburg gymnasium , from October 1904 - at the school of St. Anna and from November of the same year he lectured at the Department of General History of St. -Petersburg University with the rank of privat-docent ; since September 1906, he still taught Russian language and history at the school of A.X. Jurgenson.

Finally, in 1907, Pavel Pavlovich Mitrofanov defended his master's thesis on "The Political Activities of Joseph II, Its Supporters and Its Enemies: (1780-1790)"; German edition - Wien; Leipzig: S. W. Stern, 1909 - his translator into German, Vera Fedorovna Demelic von Panova (1868–?) In 1912 became the wife of P. P. Mitrofanov.

In 1908, he was elected professor of higher women’s courses at Raev and the Institute of History and Philology.

In 1909-1910, he again worked in foreign archives and managed to collect extremely extensive source material, but to complete the doctoral dissertation on the Austrian Emperor Leopold II, he was prevented by the outbreak of World War I.

Since 1910, he was a professor at the St. Petersburg Institute of History and Philology .

He collaborated a lot with the popular St. Petersburg magazine Hermes , in which for several years (1908-1917) he published various articles on topics of public life and the development of modern science.

He died on March 4, 1917 in Petrograd, was buried in the cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra [2] .
