Elena Mikhailovna Wolf (1927-1989) was a Soviet philologist and novelist, head of the Romance languages sector of the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR Academy of Sciences .

Biography

She was born in 1927 in Leningrad in the family of a music teacher and music education theorist Nadezhda Lvovna Grodzenskaya (1892, Vilna - 1974). In 1928, the family moved to Moscow. In 1933, her father, agronomist scientist, economist and statesman Moisey Mikhailovich Wolf (1880, Shklov - 1933), was repressed and executed.

In 1949, E. M. Wolf graduated from the Department of Classical Philology, Faculty of Philology, Moscow State University , while passing an exam in Romano-Germanic philology. She took a course in Spanish studies from E.I. Levintova and taught Spanish at Moscow State University. In 1954-1959 she worked at the university in Dushanbe , where she taught English. In 1959, at Moscow State University, she defended her thesis on the topic "Sustainable verb combinations with a noun without an excuse in modern Spanish." Since 1960, she worked at the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and devoted herself to the study and teaching of the Portuguese language . In 1964, she published an article on the Portuguese language of Brazil [1] , and in 1965, in collaboration with B. A. Nikonov, was one of the first textbooks of the Portuguese language [2] . In the same year, E. M. Wolf began to teach an optional Portuguese language course for the MSU Spaniards. In 1971, under its editorship, the Reverse Portuguese Dictionary was published [3] . In 1974 she organized a romance seminar at the Institute of Linguistics. In the same year she defended her doctoral dissertation on the subject “Pronouns in Ibero-Romance Languages ​​(personal, possessive and indicative),” based on which she published a monograph. In 1975, while on a business trip to Bulgaria, she initiated the study of Portuguese at the University of Sofia . EM Wolf also laid the foundation for the scientific study of the manuscript heritage of the Ibero-Romanesque countries, stored in Russian archives and libraries. She is the author of the textbook “History of the Portuguese Language” [4] , an article on the Portuguese language in TSB [5] and many works on Catalonics and Portuguese Studies.

Among the works of E. M. Wolf should also be noted “Grammar and Semantics of Romance Languages” (1978), “Formation of Romance Literary Languages. Portuguese Language ”(1984),“ Functional Semantics of Evaluation ”(1985).

She died in 1989 in Moscow. She was buried at the Don cemetery .
