Biography

August Kopis was born in Breslau (now Wroclaw , Poland ). In 1815, he began to study painting at the Prague Academy of Arts , but due to a hand injury he could not prove himself as an artist, after which he devoted himself to literature. He lived for some time in Dresden and Vienna , after which he went to Italy in 1822. In Naples, Kopis became a close friend of the poet Augustus von Platen ; Together with the German artist Kopisz discovered the famous “ Blue Grotto ” on the northern coast of the island of Capri , which, thanks to the description of Kopisz, has become one of the most popular tourist attractions and actually the emblem of the island.

In 1828, Kopis settled in Berlin , where he received a pension from King of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm IV , and in 1838 - the title of professor.

In 1847, Kopisz moved to Potsdam , where on behalf of King Friedrich Wilhelm he composed "Die Schlösser und Gärten zu Potsdam" (B., 1854 ) [1] .

Among the poems by Kopis ("Gedichte", B., 1836 ; "Allerlei Geists", B., 1848 ) his witty, funny, playful and fabulous ballads are especially successful. The “Historie von Noah” ( “The Story of Noah” - translation by M. L. Mikhailov ), “Die Heinzelmännchen” , “Das Grüne Tier”, “Der Schneiderjunge von Krippstedt” and others. Carl Bötticher published it “Gesammelte Werke” enjoyed great popularity. "(B., 1856 ).

Kopis died on February 6, 1853 in Berlin.
