Biography
R. I. Gelvig was born on September 12, 1873 in the city of Lipetsk , Tambov province (Russia) [2] . After graduating from high school in 1892, he entered the natural department of the Physics and Mathematics Department of the Imperial University of St. Petersburg , which he graduated in 1897. After that, having decided to devote himself to medicine, Helvig enters the medical faculty of the Kiev Imperial University of St. Vladimir .
After graduating from the university (with honors) in 1902, Helvig remains at the university an assistant to the prospector in the department of normal anatomy, at the same time teaching anatomy in several other educational institutions [3] . 5 years later, in 1907, he transferred to work at the Kiev Women's Medical Institute, which opened. During this period of his life, Helvig is also engaged in active social activities, publishes a number of articles on teaching methods, and also attends anatomical schools in Germany and Austria.
At the suggestion of his former St. Petersburg teacher P.F. Lesgaft , Helvig is studying the hip joint ; according to the results of his research, a separate book was published “On the shape of the human hip joint” (1912; in 1918 the book was also published in German) [3] . In March 1913 he defended his doctoral dissertation (at the University of St. Vladimir) on the same topic [2] , after which he was engaged in research on the anatomy of the skull, as well as blood vessels and nerves of the head [4] .
In the spring of 1918, Helvig came to the Crimea , where he took an active part in the creation of the Tauride University . He was elected professor of the Department of Normal Anatomy, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and then Rector of the University of Taurida. Helvig participated in the development of the program document “Regulations on the Tauride University”, actively involved outstanding scientists (such as D.V. Ainalov , N.I. Andrusov , S.N. Bulgakov , V.I. Vernadsky , B in the newly created university) D. Grekov , N. K. Gudziy , A. P. Kadlubovsky , N. I. Kuznetsov , S. I. Metalnikov , G. F. Morozov , V. A. Obruchev et al. [5] ). Helvig also made significant contributions to the creation of the scientific library of the Taurida University [2] [3] .
October 2, 1920 Helvig suddenly died of typhus .

Memory
According to the decision of the City Council of Simferopol, one of the squares of the city near the university buildings on Lazaretnaya Street, where the medical faculty was located, bore the name of Roman Ivanovich Gelvig (until 1930) [1] [2] .
