Biography

Born December 26, 1826 in the Negley Born in Pittsburgh, PA, in the family of Jacob Negley and Mary Ann Scott . His aunt Sarah was married to , the founder of Mellon Bank .

James studied at public schools, after which he graduated from Western University of Pennsylvania ( English University of Pennsylvania , now - University of Pittsburgh ). He participated in the Mexican-American war as a volunteer 1st Pennsylvania Volunteers . After the war he became a farmer, also engaged in gardening.

He was also a member of the US Civil War . On April 19, 1861, he was appointed Brigadier General of the Pennsylvania State Police. He created a volunteer brigade and served under the command of in the Shenandoah Valley . Negli's appointment to the post of major general expired on July 20, but he continued to be in the rank of brigadier general of volunteers. In October 1861, he was appointed commander of the 7th Brigade of the Department of the Ohio . He participated in an expedition to Chattanooga and the Battle of Chattanooga . On November 29, 1862, Negli was appointed Major General and took command of the 8th Division of the Ohio Army . His division, along with the division under the command of General George Thomas as part of the XIVth corps of the Union Army, participated in the Battle of Stone River , where James Negley played an important role in the victory of the Union. Then he participated in the Tullahom campaign and the battle of Chikamog , where after the defeat of the Union Army, he was accused of this defeat, released from command, but was subsequently acquitted. When Ulysses Grant in 1864 became an General-Chef , he again invited James Negley to his team. But in January 1865, Negli finally resigned from military service.

After the war, in 1868, he was elected from the Republicans in the United States Congress, where he worked from 1869 to 1875. In 1877, during the , Neagley served as commander of the city’s militia. In 1884 he was again elected to Congress and worked there from 1885 to 1887. After leaving politics, he was engaged in affairs in the railway industry. In 1897, as a veteran of the Pennsylvania Wars, he was awarded the Military Order of Foreign Wars .

He died on August 7, 1901 in the city of Plainfield, New Jersey. He was buried in the Allegheny Cemetery cemetery in Pittsburgh. [2]
