Biography

Friedrich Johann Koenig was born on April 17, 1774 in the city of Eisleben in the family of a successful farmer from South Saxony. He received a good education at the city gymnasium, then he attended a lecture course at the University of Leipzig.

He came up with the first technical improvements at the age of 15. In 1806, Friedrich Koenig moved to London, where he paid attention to his invention. In 1807, three London printing houses allocated Koenig money for the construction of a printing machine, and in 1810, with the help of the master of mathematics, Andrei Bauer, Koenig assembled a pre-press machine. Due to various improvements in design, the machine could produce up to 400 prints per hour [2] .

Cylinder-type

König created the first cylinder printing press in the year 1810. In this type of machine, a sheet of paper was rolled by a cylinder (drum) in a mold with a set mounted on a thaler, and paint was supplied from a rotating roller [2] .

Replacing flat surfaces with rotating cylinders immediately increased several times the productivity of the machine. Koenig made the first machine in 1810, and received a patent on March 10, 1810. The first printed product of this machine was a sheet prepared in April 1811 and in the Annual Register for 1810 [2] .

Koenig's invention aroused interest among the owners of large newspapers. In 1814, Koenig assembled two cylindrical machines for the Times printing house, which printed at a speed of 1000 prints per hour, and after a number of changes the speed increased to 2000 sheets [3] .

Further Improvements

Then Friedrich Koenig invented a machine with two cylinders, which printed simultaneously on two sides of a sheet. Orders for it began to come from different countries.

Koenig became rich, and in 1817 he returned to Germany. In Würzburg, he founded the König & Bauer company for the production of printing machines. Later, he established the production of printing machines that print with two inks [2] .
