In 1758, he was appointed commander in chief of the Rhine Army in the place of Count Clermont , but showed little enterprise in this place, but he still managed to push the Duke of Braunschweig to the right bank of the Rhine .
In 1759, he became commander in chief of the entire French army in Germany and penetrated, after the victory of Broglie in the battle of Bergen ( April 13 ), to Weser ; On August 1, he lost the battle at Minden , was forced to retreat to the Rhine and relinquish his rank of commander in chief in September.
