Character Story
Nardol first appears in the series in the 2015 Christmas edition of Husbands River Song . In 5343, Professor Song hired him as his assistant in a human colony on the planet Mendorax Dellore. It is he who leads the Doctor to the River. During the episode, Nardol loses his body, but remains alive, as his head was loaded into the body of the Cyborg King Hydroflax. After 24 years spent with the River on Darillium, the Doctor returns the body to the stranger. In the 2016 Christmas special issue, “The Return of Doctor Mysterio, ” Nardol appears as the companion of the Doctor, where he looks after him and helps with the investigation in New York .
Nardol continues to accompany the Doctor when he becomes a professor at the University of St. Luke in Bristol . He helps the lord of time protect the Vault on campus. Polukiborg takes his duties seriously and therefore does not really approve of his friend’s decision to take Bill Potts as an individual student, believing that she will distract the Doctor from his task. Also, he was not at first aware that the Doctor was taking Bill to travel to the TARDIS . Upon learning that the Doctor left the university without emergency, Nardol becomes displeased.
In the Oxygen series, Nardol unintentionally travels with Doctor and Bill into space. During the adventure, they almost die, and the Doctor loses his sight, which he tells his assistant on arrival at the university. In “ Extremis ”, more detailed circumstances become known of how Nardol and the Doctor began to travel together: River ordered the cyborg to watch the time lord, before going to the Library , and now he considers it his duty. He assists the Doctor in his task of guarding his sworn girlfriend Missy . In the episode " Pyramid at the End of the World " a threat looms over the Earth in the form of an alien race of invaders - Monks. Solving this problem, Nardol almost dies, having become infected with a fatal bacterial infection, but he survives due to the inhuman structure of the body. The aliens, meanwhile, manage to take control of humanity, as Bill had to make a deal in exchange for the sight of the Doctor, who was in mortal danger. In the “ Position ”, Nardol, having fully recovered, unites with the Doctor and Bill, and together they manage to drive out the invaders and return the life of the planet to its usual course. In subsequent adventures with friends, Nardol repeatedly shows resourcefulness and the ability to adapt to circumstances.
In the ending of the season, “ Live our lives forever ” / “ The Fall of the Doctor, ” the Doctor’s team, along with Missy, sends an alarm signal from a spaceship from the planet Mondas, which leads to the fact that Bill is wounded in the heart and turned into a cyberman with some help previous incarnation of Missy, the Master. Friends manage to escape from the hordes of cybermen on the shuttle under the control of Nardol, where they fly to the upper levels of the colonial ship. In the end, they find themselves on the floor where there is a solar farm with a handful of people. When it comes to fighting the cybermen, Nardol shows off his computer and combat skills, launching powerful explosions throughout the area. When the Doctor realizes that in order to defeat the opponents, he will have to blow up the entire floor, he instructs Nardol to head the evacuation of people to safety at another farm on a higher level. Unsure that he would ever see his friend again, Nardol fulfills the request, realizing that the cybermen will one day return to convert the remaining inhabitants into their own kind. In the Christmas special issue “ Twice in Time ”, Nardol returns as an avatar from the memoirs collected at the end of his life with the Testimony project. He meets the Doctor and hugs his friend goodbye before he regenerates.

Casting and Production
In November 2015, it was first announced that Matt Lucas would take part in the Christmas special edition of The Husbands River Song as one of the guest actors to play a character named Nardol [2] . The return of the actor became known on June 14, 2016, when it was confirmed that he would join the main cast of the series in the tenth season [3] . Stephen Moffat argued his decision to return Nardol to Doctor Who by the fact that Matt Lucas himself turned to him with this proposal, and then the showrunner took the opportunity and entered the famous comedian in the series on an ongoing basis [4] . Initially, the character of Lucas was supposed to appear in only a few series, but subsequently his role was expanded [1] .
