Biography

The early years

Amedi Jay Van Buren was born in New York into a wealthy family. His father was the head of an advertising company. Emedy received a good education in business [5] .

Animation Career

For the first time, Emedi van Buuren began to engage in animation when he formed a partnership with Paul Terry and founded Aesop's Fables Studio in 1920 to create Aesop's Fables cartoons . Van Buren released the first sound cartoon "Lunch Time" in 1928 (a month before Disney's Steamboat Willie ).

In 1929, Terry creates his own studio Terrytoons and in the place of the animator John Foster takes the place . Then the studio received a new name Van Beuren Studios.

Van Buren released his films through RKO Pictures . Van Buren's early sound cartoons are almost identical in style and plot to silent cartoons: a small amount of dialogue and random sound effects.

In 1931, Van Buren released a series of cartoons about two unemployed "Tom and Jerry." They were the prototype of Tom and Jerry Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [6] . In each cartoon, Tom and Jerry changed their profession and location. Stylistically, the cartoons were similar to the Fleischer Studios cartoons that was across the road. According to Toonopedia employees, Max Fleischer himself sometimes moonlighted on Van Buren. Despite all this, Tom and Jerry did not get as much popularity as Mickey Mouse, Betty Boop, and the cartoon ceased to be released in 1933. It is interesting that the artist and screenwriter Joseph Barbera participated in the work on the cartoon series about Tom and Jerry, who in the 40s, along with William Hannah, created a cartoon about the cat with the mouse “Tom and Jerry”.

Van Buren was dissatisfied with the result, so he hired Bart Gillett to his Walt Disney director 's studio and animator Tom Palmer to create the Rainbow Parade color cartoon series.

These efforts of Van Buren were noticed and, finally, he managed to become the sponsor of the popular cartoon series.

In 1932, Van Buren bought 12 comedies of Charlie Chaplin for $ 10,000 each, added the music of Gene Rodemic and Winston Sharples , and republished them through RKO Radio Pictures.

The Van Bouren Library was sold by RKO for various television shows, reprinted, and distributed for home cinema in the 1940s and 1950s. For example, in 1950, the characters in the Van Boyren cartoon “Tom and Jerry” were renamed Dick and Larry to avoid confusion with Tom and Jerry MGM [3] .

The last years of life

Van Buren died of a heart attack at the age of 58, on November 12, 1938.
