History

This coffee variety appeared in the vicinity of the city of Maragogype, in the Brazilian state of Bayan , in whose honor it was named. This state has excellent conditions for growing coffee, thanks to which it was possible to obtain beans of such a large size. Over time, this variety has spread throughout South America . Currently, it is grown in Nicaragua , Colombia , Guatemala , Mexico and several other countries [3] [5] [6] .

Maragogype was actually the result of the first experience in growing coffee in Brazil . Not knowing which coffee trees could take root in the Brazilian climate, local planters planted trees of various varieties in a small area. Some of these trees died, and as a result of pollinating the surviving trees, a large grain crop was obtained [5] .

Varieties

There are various varieties of maragodzhip depending on the place of growth [5] [7] :

  1. In Nicaragua, the largest grains of this variety are grown. A drink made from these grains has an astringent bitter taste with rich floral, wine and fruit notes and a pronounced aroma. Also, this coffee has a slight sour taste. The taste and aroma of Nicaragua maragogip are so strong that they are felt even in drinks made with milk .
  2. The Mexican and Colombian varieties are distinguished by a sharp nut-chocolate flavor and a light consistency.
  3. In terms of taste, a maragogype from Guatemala is considered the best, characterized by both grains that are ideal in shape and balanced taste and aroma.
