An annual plant with upright or upright stems 60-180 cm tall, with 2-4 knots.
Leaves up to 60 cm long and 0.6-1.5 cm wide, green, narrowly lanceolate, rough, pointed at the end. The vaginas of the lower leaves are slightly hairy, the upper ones are bare. Tongue up to 8 mm long, filmy, with a blunt tip.
The panicle is 15-45 cm long, sprawling, very loose. Spikelets 23–32 mm long, drooping, on unequal branches 5–35 mm long, with 2–5 flowers . Spikelet scales 20–32 mm and longer, almost equal in length to each other, lanceolate, rounded, smooth, with 9–11 veins, with a pointed apex. The axis of the spikelet with the joint between the spikelet scales and the upper flower, when ripening, only the upper fruit is separated, the rest break off or remain linked to it. The lower floral scales are 15-25 (45) mm long, narrow-lanceolate, at the apex with two membranous teeth, covered with bristly hairs in the lower two thirds, rough in the upper part, with 7 veins, at the two flowers nearest to the base - on the back with a curved with a twisted awn 30–55 mm long, extending approximately from the middle, the third flower (if any) has a boneless. Upper floral scales are lanceolate, finely hairy in keels. Anthers 2.5-3 mm long.
The grains are oblong, hidden in flowering scales.
Hexaploid species, set of chromosomes - 2n = 42.
Widely distributed in the Mediterranean , in Western , Central and Southern Europe, in Iran , Afghanistan , Turkey , North Africa , also in Japan and South Korea , in Australia and New Zealand , in North and South America .
It is considered an invasive species on cultivated land. The seeds of barren oats are difficult to separate from the seed oats .
