Biography
The son of the artist Emil Sigismundovich Bendel. After leaving school, until 1924 he studied philosophy at the University of Friborg in Switzerland and took private painting lessons. After returning to Moscow in 1925 he studied at the Department of Painting at the State Academy of Arts of VKhUTEMAS , in 1925-1928 - in the studio of F. I. Rerberg in 1929-1930 - in the studio of D. N. Kardovsky . Since 1933 he was engaged in painting.
P. Bendel was a member, and since 1940 - the chairman of the association of Moscow artists.
He was fond of photography, so at the beginning of World War II he was asked to the front as a photojournalist . In 1942, he was captured by Vyazma. He drew German officers there - therefore, he was not shot in the German camp.
After the war ended in 1945, the NKVD was arrested and on April 16, 1945 on charges of anti-Soviet agitation and espionage, under Art. 58 was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 5 years of exile and sent to Vorkuta in Vorkutlag .
A legend is circulated in art circles that Bendel was arrested for this reason: he painted solemn portraits of leaders for various communist holidays. A portrait of Stalin of his work hung on the building of the NKVD on Lubyanka . The canvas was glued in 4 parts, and when it rained and the canvas became wet, it seemed that a grille was painted on the leader’s face ...
Bendel survived in Vorkuta only because he painted portraits of co-owners and security guards on scraps of paper, for which the latter paid him with an invaluable stain of bread. The director of the Vorkuta Drama Theater found out about him in the camp and contributed to his almost free settlement. The artist drew costumes and sets for all theater productions.
In 1945-1952 he designed the performances of the Musical Drama Theater in Vorkuta (“Maria Stuart” by F. Schiller, “Cio-Cio-San” by J. Puccini, “Son of the Clown” by I. Dunaevsky and others). He was his main artist. Since 1953 he participated in exhibitions.
Amnestied in 1953.
After his release in 1955, he was forbidden to live in Moscow and Bendel went to Syktyvkar to the local theater. Later, he settled in Serpukhov . Since 1956 he made drawings for the magazines Theater and Theater Life, worked in the magazine Ogonyok , the newspaper Izvestia . Actively participated in exhibitions.
Only at the end of his life was Pyotr Emilievich allowed to come to Moscow. In the late 1970s, he was allowed to visit Leipzig ( GDR ).
He painted the majority of holiday cards, postal envelopes, and many postage stamps of the USSR of those years. He is the author of paintings, prints and posters. Many world-famous images of Marx , Engels , Lenin , Stalin and Mao Zedong were created by him.
