Louis XIII Cognac has been produced since 1874 from the grapes of the Grand Champagne subregion of Cognac County ( France ). This blend has an average of 1,200 cognac spirits aged from 40 years to 100 years.
Each generation of Louis XIII cognac is created by 4 generations of Remy Martin cellars' masters, one after another, therefore it is sometimes called the “century in a bottle”.
History
Louis XIII de Rémy Martin cognac has existed for more than 140 years since its creation in 1874 by Paul-Émile Rémy Martan I.
The name Louis XIII was given to brandy in honor of the French king Louis XIII, at the time of which the Remi Martan family settled in the Cognac region.
Louis XIII Cognac House itself was founded in 1724 by Remi Martan, a hereditary winegrower and winemaker from Charente. Despite the ban on breaking vineyards with a special royal decree, Louis XV allowed the Martan family to plant new vines.
The subsequent heirs of Remi Martan continued the successful work of their ancestor and the next family representative, Paul Emile, was one of the first to abandon the practice of selling brandy exclusively in barrels and began bottling it. Paul Emil created several original bottle shapes (including the one into which Louis XIII cognac is being poured) and chose the image of the centaur as a trademark (it was legalized in 1903). The next generation of the Martan family, namely his third son, Remy, changed the bottle of Louis XIII cognac based on the heraldic lily, which later became the symbol of this cognac.
The high cost and prestige of this brandy is reflected in its history.
