He was on the side of the popes in their struggle with the emperor Frederick II and served as the main pillar of the so-called "priestly kings" - Heinrich Raspe of Thuringia and Wilhelm Holland .
From 1249 to 1260 he was a papal legate in Germany . Pope Innocent IV did not dare to strengthen his power by affirming him to the archbishops of Mainz.
In 1256, Gohstaden, contributed to the election of Richard of Cornwallis , whom he crowned in Aachen in 1257 . Gohstaden in 1259 broke the almost republican independence of Cologne and weakened the power of the patricians by the elevation of workshops.
In 1248 laid the foundation of the famous Cologne Cathedral , and in 1263 - Xanten Cathedral .
The statue of Conrad von Hochstaden on the Cologne Town Hall tramples the figure occupied by autophella, along with other statues trampling on other human vices.
