Biography
Born February 27, 1932. With a silver medal, he graduated in 1949 from a school in the city of Braslav . From 1949 to 1954 he studied at the Faculty of Biology and Soil, Leningrad University . He specialized in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology. The thesis was devoted to the study of polychaete worms of the Sea of Okhotsk . After graduation, he entered the graduate school of the Zoological Institute . In 1957, he was assigned to the staff of the laboratory of marine research as a junior researcher. In 1959, under the direction of Pavel Vladimirovich Ushakov , he defended his dissertation on the subject “ Polychaeta worms of the littoral of the Kuril Islands.” From 1962 to 1964 he was a junior research fellow at the Biological Research Institute of Leningrad University. Created a laboratory of experimental hydrobiology at the university. From 1964 to 1978 he led the Marine Biological Station at Cape Cartes . In 1971 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "The concept of critical salinity in zoology." Since 1978, he was approved as a senior research fellow, and since 1986 he became the chief fellow at the Marine Research Laboratory of the Zoological Institute [1] .
Scientific and social activities
The area of scientific interests is the study of adaptations of living organisms to abiotic environmental factors. Investigates the mechanisms of osmotic regulation and water-salt metabolism of aquatic organisms. He developed the concept of critical salinity of biological processes. Specialist in biology and taxonomy of polychaete worms . He substantiated the idea of physiological adaptations of freshwater animals of marine origin. Representatives of this group of animals can live indefinitely in fresh water in adulthood, but their fertilization and larval development occurs in water with high salinity. He proposed a scheme of ecological zoning of brackish waters [1] .
He supervised the preparation of about 20 master's theses [1] .
The creator and leader of a scientific seminar on the problems of cloning, the use of molecular genetic methods. Issues of studying the adaptations of organisms, speciation, and the tasks of zoological systematics are also discussed [1] .
In 1993 and 1994, he led Russian-American expeditions, during which studies of Arctic estuaries were conducted. He was part of a comprehensive radioecological expedition to study the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. For these works in 1987 he was awarded a Certificate of Honor, and in 1997 - the medal "For the Salvation of the Dead" [1] .
One of the creators and curators of public aquariums in St. Petersburg . He was the main scientific consultant of the popular science-promoting film about the St. Petersburg Aquarium [1] .
