Over the years of its existence, the Great Music Award has been widely recognized among musicians and the audience of listeners and has become one of the most anticipated events in the musical life of Latvia. In 1993-1995, the award was presented in the hall of the Great Guild , and since 1996, in the more spacious hall of the Latvian National Opera . The ceremony is broadcast on Latvian radio and television .

The high prestige of the award in society and among musicians is facilitated by the painstaking previous work of an authoritative jury [2] . The jury commission works throughout the year, and the final meeting takes place in January next year, after which the Ministry of Culture officially announces the names of the winners.

The silver figurine of the work of the artist Armand Jekabsons became the symbol of the award.

The annual award-giving events are organized by the Latvian Ministry of Culture and the Latvian Music Information Center in cooperation with Latvian television, Latvian radio and the Latvian National Opera. Since 1999, the presentation of the prize has been supported by the State Fund for Cultural Capital.
