Biography
Yanagihara was born in Los Angeles in the family of hematologist and oncologist Richard Yanagihara and an immigrant from Seoul .
In 1995, after graduating from Smith College , Yanagihara moved to New York , where she worked as a publicist for several years. She also worked as an editor in two magazines: from 2007, in the travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler , and from 2015, in T: The New York Times Style Magazine .
Creativity
Yanagihara's first novel, People Among the Trees , was released in 2013. The image of the central character is entirely based on Daniel Gayduzek - a pediatrician and virologist, Nobel laureate in physiology and medicine , who was arrested in 1996 on pedophilia charges and subsequently pleaded guilty. The novel is written in the form of a diary, and the main character's sexuality is one of its central themes.
The success of Yanagihara was brought by her second novel, Little Life, telling of four childhood friends. The novel became a bestseller and received positive reviews from critics. So, the literary observer of the portal Meduza Galina Yuzefovich noted its versatility:
| Almost all people writing and talking about Little Life diverge. For some, this is a book about the fact that all the love of the world is not enough to heal the trauma inflicted in childhood. For someone - a story about love and friendship, and also about the fact that the border between them is unsteady and uncertain. For some - a brutal male gay romance with tin and blood. For some, it’s a story of overcoming and the possibility of happiness in any anamnesis, but for someone it’s a story about the artist and the paradoxes of creativity, or, even more surprising, about mathematics and its connection with reality [2] . |
