Biography
He studied at Trashkun , then at Vilnius Grammar School, where he studied drawing with Maciej Pshybylsky. Since 1830 he studied painting at the Imperial University of Vilnius under Jan Rustem [1] . He took part in the Uprising of 1831 . After the defeat of the uprising, he emigrated to France , where in 1833 - 1836 he continued to study painting in Paris . He also studied in Zaragoza . In the south of France he decorated palaces and churches. He traveled to Switzerland and Italy , in 1848 he traveled to Austria, went to Krakow. In 1848 he settled in Lviv , where until 1850 he lived under the name of Tsibulsky.
Returning to France, settled in Bordeaux . From there he went to London ; participated in the activities of the radical Polish emigration. He worked at the court of Queen Victoria .
From 1857 he settled in Vilna , where he remained until the end of his life.
Creativity
Illakovich’s paintings are characterized by academic features. He painted portraits of many celebrities - Georges Sand , Lajosh Koshut , Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski , Jan Snyadetsky with his wife, also a portrait of the Plater family, priest Casimir Pshiyalgovsky, his own self-portrait.
Illakovich's works also include landscapes (Mill on the Seine, Landscape of Southern France, Devil's Bridge in the Pyrenees), genre scenes (First Confession of Love), historical paintings (Vitold and Jagello accept swords before the Battle of Grunwald Crusaders ”, 1849).
He was also engaged in church art: he owns the “Holy Trinity” in a church in Sudyarva , the painting in the altar of the church in Vidishki (now the Ukmerg district ) and the altar painting “St. Nicholas” in the Jesuit church in Lviv, the mural in the church of St. Michael the Archangel in Smorgon , in Yuzefov (Latvia).
Illakovich's individual works are kept in the Lithuanian Museum of Art , the National Museum in Warsaw , the National Museum in Krakow , the Lviv Art Gallery , the Mickiewicz Museum in Paris , the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest , and other collections and private collections.
