Mutual guarantee of both nations ( Polish. Zaręczenie Wzajemne Obojga Narodów ) - additional instructions to the Constitution of May 3, 1791 , approved by the Four-year Seym on October 20, 1791 . Intended to explain the terms of the Polish-Lithuanian union, which were not formulated in the Constitution.
The guarantee fixed the unity and indivisibility of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in a single state, called Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The document emphasized the federal character of the state and guaranteed the equality of both parties in its management.
The guarantee provided for the creation of a common government, army and financial system. Litvin was guaranteed proportional participation in the new central government of the Commonwealth. The military and state commissions of both nations were to consist of an equal number of representatives of the Crown and Lithuania, and in the Police Commission of both nations the ratio of Poles and Lithuanians was 2/3 to 1/3, respectively. The rotation of Polish and Lithuanian representatives on the posts of chairmen of commissions was ensured.
The document received the same status as the Union of Lublin Act. It was decided that the "Guarantee" will become an integral part of the Pacta conventa , and will be mandatory for execution by both Stanislav Augustus Poniatovsky and each subsequent monarch of the Commonwealth.
