Parliamentary elections in Romania (2016)

The elections to the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of Romania were held on December 11, 2016. The elections were held in the framework of the new electoral system, adopted in 2015 , which provided for a return to the proportional electoral system, the last time used in the 2004 elections . The new electoral law provides for a representation rate of 73,000 residents for deputies and 168,000 residents for senators. As a result of the election, 466 deputies were elected (308 deputies, 18 deputies of national minorities, and 134 senators). The Romanian diaspora will be represented by 4 deputies and 2 senators. For the first time, mail-order voting for this type of election was made possible.

Summary

According to the results of the elections, the Social Democratic Party won, having won the majority of seats in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of Romania. In addition to the Social Democrats, national Liberals , representatives of the parties Save the Romania Union , the Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania , the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats and the Popular Movement are in both houses of parliament.
