Biography
Mateus Caramelo is a graduate of the football academy of the club Mogi-Mirin, in which he made his professional debut in 2013 in the Paulista League match. The 18-year-old defender attracted attention not only with a confident game, but also with an unusual nickname (translated as “ caramel ”), as well as the fact that in Brazil at that moment the song of the duo Munhoz & Mariano Camaro Amarelo Was popular ("Yellow Camaro "). The player himself could not explain the reason for choosing such a nickname during an interview with Globo reporters [2] .
In the same year, Caramelo joined the camp of one of the most popular and titled clubs in the country - São Paulo. For “tricolor”, he played in three matches, after which in 2014, on loan, he played for Atlético Goianiense. As part of Atlético, Mateus became the champion of Goias. In 2015, the defender went on loan again, this time at the Shapekoens. In 2016, he returned to São Paulo. His confident play was a “surprise” for the club's mentor Edgardo Bausa [3] . Caramelo took part in the Libertadores Cup , the Paulista League and began the new season in the Brazilian Serie A.
In September of the same year, he again went on loan at Shapekoens [1] . He played three more matches in the Brazilian championship and in the draw of the South American Cup. The team for the first time in its history managed to reach the final of the international tournament. Caramelo spent the entire return semifinal match against the Argentinean “ San Lorenzo ”, in which a draw (0: 0) brought Chape to the finals [4] .
November 28, 2016 he died in a plane crash near Medellin, along with almost all of the club’s staff and coaching staff, who flew to the first final match of the UAC-2016 with Atletico Nacional [1] . Later CONMEBOL awarded the victory in the Chapecoense tournament [5] .
