Monica Lam earned a bachelor's degree from the University of British Columbia in 1980. In 1987 at Carnegie Mellon University, she defended her Ph.D. dissertation on the topic “ Optimizing Compiler for the ” ( eng. A Systolic Array Optimizing Compiler ) [4] . Shortly after the defense, she joined Stanford University , where she continues to work today (for 2016) [5] with a short pause in 1998, when she went on temporary leave and worked as a senior researcher at the then-newly created company [6] .

Monica Lam’s research covers topics such as compilation theory , , operating systems , computer security , architecture , and high-performance computing systems . For 2016, she heads the MobiSocial laboratory [5] , and previously led the Stanford University Intermediate Format (SUIF) project [7] . The SUIF project was completed successfully with the development of a compiler infrastructure for the development of new optimization and parallelization techniques.

Monika Lam is a member of the editorial boards of high-ranking journals and regularly leads the organization of scientific conferences on compilers, languages , operating systems and computer architecture or is invited by a plenary speaker [6] , and also receives various awards for the best articles and for the most cited articles. She wrote more than a hundred conference and several dozens of journal articles [8] , her Hirsch index is 67 [9] . Since 2007, she was elected a member of the Association of Computer Engineering [10] .
