Demitas , or dmitas , or demitasse (from fr. Demi-tasse - half a cup), is a small cup designed to serve coffee in Turkish , espresso or ristretto ; volume standard for making coffee in Turkish [1] [2] .
Such cups are often served with small coffee spoons and saucers. Before serving the finished drink, the cup is usually warmed up [3] .
Content
Description
Demitas is a cup with thick walls with a volume of 60-90 milliliters, which is about half the volume of a traditional coffee cup. In most cases, the shape of the cup is similar to an inverted truncated cone , while inside it has an egg-shaped shape . The presence of thick walls and a decrease in the diameter of the bottom of the cup allows you to keep the temperature of the drink longer [3] [4] [5] .
Typically, cups of this type are made of porcelain . However, glass , ceramics or stainless steel [3] [5] can also be used for their production.
The second type of demitas is glass cups in a metal frame [3] .
There is a separate type of demitas for serving cappuccino , which has a large volume - about 150 milliliters [6] .
Collecting
Demitas can serve as a collectible. The largest collection of these cups, numbering 650 copies and included in the Guinness Book of Records , is located in Ipswich, Australia. The collection was collected by Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale and has been located in the Ipswich City Council since 1993 [7] .
