The National Democratic Congress ( NDC ) is a Social Democratic political party in Ghana , one of the two main parties in the country (together with the liberal New Patriotic Party ). It is a center-left party. It was founded in 1992 by Jerry Rawlings , who was the leader of Ghana from 1981 to 1993 and the president of the country in 1993-2001. After the formation of the Provisional Committee of National Defense as a result of the military coup on December 31, 1981, the international community insisted on a return to democracy. The National Democratic Congress was founded as the ruling party before the 1992 election, when Rawlings was elected president as a candidate from the NDK. In 1996, he was re-elected from the party, but in the next election in 2000 he lost to the candidate from the New Patriotic Party . After a break in the 2008 elections, NKK candidate John Mills won again, and in 2012, John Dramani Mahama .
