Origin of surname

A possible etymology of the surname Zoye / Tsoie is the Slavic name of the noisy jay bird ( Latin: Garrulus glandarius , Polish. Sójka , Slovenian. Šoja ).

The phonetic difference of the German variants of the surname is explained by the variability in the Low German language of the sounds g / j , which are positional allophones (compare the name of rye : other English ryge → English rye ).

The addition of von Manteuffel to the original surname appeared only in 1600, when it was first used by Ebergard Tsege, and its source can hardly be easily determined. O. M. Stackelberg hypothesized [1] that “Manteuffel” goes back to the distorted vernacular name of the jay in German : Manduvel , in which case the addition could be caused by the desire of the surname to strengthen the version of the origin of the genus from this bird.

History

Denmark

On June 11, 1325, Gerhard Zoye was mentioned among 40 Danish vassals in Vironia , who set out to collect 2000 marks of silver to King Christopher II . In 1333, the canon Johann "by the name of Tsoge" was mentioned in Dorpat . This almost simultaneous mention of representatives of this genus testifies to his arrival in the Baltic states as early as the 13th century. The earliest surviving seal of the genus is the image of an eagle over two stripes in a document issued in Reval on June 30, 1390 on the occasion of the death of Klaus Zoye, son or grandson of the ancestor Gerhard Zoye.

The genus Tsege probably comes from Stralsund or from the island of Rügen in Pomerania - between 1248 and 1252. in the documents of Jaromir Ryugensky , the vassal of the Schwerin church refers to the knight Tiderikus Zeuge . In the oldest city book of Stralsund in 1281, Wilbrandus Tsoe is mentioned, and in 1296 - Hermannus Tsohe . Attention is also drawn to the fact that Zoye used almost the same coat of arms in Estonia as one of the lines of the Slavic Rügen-Pomeranian princes - the Putbus family . The coats of arms of many German vassals and ministers in many cases come from the coats of arms of their overlords . In 1219, Prince Ritzgen Witzlaw accompanied King Valdemar II on his campaign to Estonia, and there, together with the Germans who joined them, defeated the Ests . In this regard, the possibility of the arrival of the Rügen vassals by the name of Zoya to Vironia during these events is not ruled out.

Sweden

The clan of barons Tsege-von-Manteuffel was introduced into the matrix of the Courland nobility on October 17, 1620.

With a diploma from the Swedish King Gustav III , dated 1772, the Swedish envoy to Berlin, Lieutenant General, Otton-Jacob Tsege-von-Manteuffel , with descending descendants, was elevated to the dignity of the Swedish kingdom of Sweden.

Russia

By the definitions of the Governing Senate, dated June 10, 1853 and February 28, 1862, the Baron title was recognized for the Courland noble family of Tsege-von-Manteuffel. By the definition of the Governing Senate, dated October 4, 1854, Lieutenant Nikolai Georgievich Tsege-von-Manteuffel was confirmed in the baronial dignity of the guard.

With a diploma of the Roman Emperor Franz I , dated April 27 (16), 1759, the senior landrat of Estonia, Gotthard Johann Andreevich Tsege-von-Manteuffel (1690-1763), was elevated, with descending descendants, to the count of the Roman Empire dignity. The adoption of the aforementioned dignity and its use in Russia was followed, on March 15, 1762, by the highest permission.
