Mary Kathryn “Heidi” Heitkamp ( born Mary Kathryn "Heidi" Heitkamp ; born October 30, 1955 , Breckenridge , Minnesota ) is an American politician, junior senator from North Dakota from January 2013 to January 3, 2019, representing the Democratic Party . From 1993 to 2001, she served as Attorney General for North Dakota.

In 2000, Highcamp was a candidate for governor of North Dakota , but lost to Republican John Hooven . In 2010, she considered running for Senate following the refusal of incumbent Democratic senator Byron Dorgan to re- run for a new term [1] , but then refused to run in elections against Hooven, who was an extremely popular governor. [2]
In November 2011, she announced her desire to run in the 2012 Senate election for the seat of the outgoing Democrat [3] On November 6, 2012, Highcamp defeated Republican Congressman with a margin of less than 3,000 votes. [4]
On November 6, 2018, she lost to Republican Kevin Kramer in the Senate election in North Dakota [5] .
