The breed originates from shorthorns and Dutch black-and-white cows imported in 1780 to the farm of Bestuzhev cattle breeder in the Simbirsk province . Since the beginning of the 19th century, blood of the Simmental breed has been added to the crossbreed group. The Bestuzhev cattle breed was recognized in 1869. At the beginning of the 20th century, to reduce the signs of degeneration, crosses with shorthorns were carried out, and subsequently the breed developed clean. The State Stud Book has been maintained since 1924.
Animals of the predominant milk-meat type, with a light head, straight back and back. The color is cherry red, sometimes it turns into brown, with white marks on the udder, in the groin and at the end of the tail. The live weight of cows is 450-500 kg, bulls 700-800 kg. Slaughter yield up to 60%. The average annual milk yield is 3000–3500 kg. The milk fat content is 4%.
Animals are well adapted to the harsh climatic conditions of the Volga region, unpretentious, winter well on roughage. On pastures, the body quickly walks; after calving for a long time do not reduce milk yield. Resistant to a number of diseases. Bestuzhev breed is distributed in the middle Volga region of Russia, in Tatarstan and Bashkiria.
