Yurgenson, Boris Petrovich

Boris Petrovich Yurgenson (1868–1935) was a music publisher , musicologist , co-owner (together with his brother Grigori ) of a music publishing company founded by their father, P. I. Yurgenson [2] .

Biography

Boris Yurgenson was born in 1868 in the family of the large Russian music publisher Peter Ivanovich Yurgenson and his wife, Sophia Ivanovna (nee Sots [3] ; 1840-1911 [4] ), which predetermined his future life. In 1891, he successfully graduated from the law faculty of Moscow University [5] .

After graduation, he actively helped his father in publishing, and after his death he actually became the head of the company , which he inherited with his brother Gregory [6] . He continued to improve the technique of music printing, acquiring the most modern machines for this, and also paid significant attention to the artistic design of music publications. B. P. Yurgenson entered into contacts with leading Russian composers, and significantly expanded the sales of musical editions outside the Russian Empire [5] .

In 1918, after the decree on nationalization, the company was transformed into the Music sector of the State Publishing House, in 1930 - into the State Musical Publishing House (Muzgiz), in 1963 - into the Music Publishing House [7] .

After the October coup and nationalization of the Jurgenson property by the Bolsheviks, he was in charge of the musical section of the Music Department of the People's Commissariat of Education and worked in the Music sector of the State Publishing House [8] .

Boris Petrovich Yurgenson died in 1935.

Among other things, he compiled a thematic index of the works of P. I. Tchaikovsky , published a pamphlet “ Towards a draft statutory copyright on musical works ” and published an “Outline of the History of Music Printing” (GIZ, 1928). But the most famous work of Jurgenson is the publication of the Riemann music dictionary, translated by Yu. D. Engel from the 5th German edition (Leipzig, 1900) and published in Moscow and Leipzig in 1904 [9] , with Russian lexicographers, ethnographers , historians, musicologists - P.P. Weimarn , A.V. Preobrazhensky , N.F. Findeyzen , Yu.D. Engel , of course, B.P. Jurgenson himself - expanded Riemann's vocabulary with articles about Russian musicians and musical terms, which It was not in the German original [10] .

He was married to Maria Viktorovna Yurgenson, nee Savkova (1874-1953); They had three children: two daughters (Vera and Natalya) and son Peter (1903–1971), who became a prominent Soviet scientist-zoologist and hunter, doctor of biological sciences and professor [11] .
