Biography
Born April 19, 1931 in Odessa in the family of a military doctor.
In 1933, the family moved to Leningrad, where his father was given a new job.
He graduated from high school with a silver medal and without entrance exams was enrolled in the 1st Medical Institute named after academician I.P. Pavlov . By distribution, after graduating from a medical institute in 1955-57, he worked as the chief doctor of a tuberculosis hospital in the village of Kurkiyoki, Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
In 1957 he transferred to work at the Sechenov Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry , which since January 1956 became the new scientific center of Leningrad. In those days it was headed by the outstanding physiologist L. A. Orbeli , the classics of Russian physiology A. G. Ginetsinsky , E. M. Kreps worked, and began working in the laboratory of pharmacology under the guidance of Professor M. Ya. Michelson, in which comparative pharmacological studies to elucidate the molecular structure and function of cholinergic receptors and cholinesterases and their changes during evolution.
In 1959 - defended his thesis, theme: "The mechanism and experimental therapy of bronchospasm caused by some cholinopositive substances."
In 1969 - became the head of the laboratory of biophysics of synaptic processes, which he himself founded.
In 1970 - defended his doctoral dissertation, topic: "Mechanisms of activation of the postsynaptic muscle membrane."
In 1996, he was elected professor of the Department of Physiology of the Medical Faculty of St. Petersburg State University.
In 1997 - was elected a corresponding member of the RAS.
In 2016, he was elected an academician of the RAS.
At present, he is the chief researcher at the Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry named after I.M.Sechenova.
Scientific activity
Leading specialist in the field of domestic and foreign neurophysiology.
He studied the molecular mechanisms of synaptic transmission, in particular the postsynaptic action of mediators, the functioning of ion channels and others, the selective action of various neurotoxins on certain types of receptors.
A pioneer in the creation of new tools for studying the molecular organization of channels of biological membranes, as well as the discovery of the selective effect of a number of new neurotoxins on certain types of synaptic receptors. One of the first synaptologists, he began to elucidate the subtle molecular mechanisms of presynaptic modulation of exocytosis of mediators in order to find ways of pharmacological control over this poorly studied process.
He conducted joint research in the scientific laboratories of the universities of Paris (1990-1991), Geneva (1993), Nottingham (1994-1995), Munich (1998), the results of which received brilliant reviews and were a huge contribution to the world treasury of neurobiology, serve as a fundamental contribution to the development new drugs for the management of synaptic processes between neurons in healthy and sick.
Author of over 250 articles. Among Russian physiologists, he is one of the most frequently cited in world literature.
