Biography

Antoine Doverne was born into the family of a violinist in the city of Moulins , the capital of the province of Bourbonnet , now the department of Allier . In 1730 he moved to Clermont-Ferrand , and about 1739 he moved to Paris .

Having moved to the capital, Antoine became the violinist of the royal court in Versailles . On December 11, 1739, he received his first privilege, allowing him to edit instrumental music. In 1744, he joined the Royal Academy of Music Orchestra as a violinist. In 1751, Dover became the conductor of the Royal Academy of Music Orchestra. In June 1755, he bought the position of composer of the royal court for 6,000 livres , replacing Francois Rebel . [1] [2] [3]

On October 2, 1761, Doverne, together with Gabriel Kapperan and Nicolas-Rene Jolivo, was appointed director of the concert organization Spiritual Concert "( French Concert Spirituel ). On December 25, 1764, Antoine became the “Surintendant of Royal Music”. In 1766, he tried to become the director of the Royal Academy of Music together with the cashier of the opera Nicolas-Rene Jolivo, but lost the fight to Pierre-Montan Burton and Jean-Claude Trial . Three years later, Dover achieves his goal by becoming co-director of the Opera. [4] .

On April 1, 1768, Doverne was assigned a pension of the Royal Academy of Music in the amount of 1,000 livres as the author of music. In the same year, he also received a prize of 600 livres. On October 23, 1769, Antoine was assigned an annual pension of 1,200 livres as a reward for his service at court.

In July 1771, Dover again became the director of the Spiritual Concert, this time together with Burton, and held this position until March 1773. March 21, 1776 he was appointed master of music of the King’s House. April 18 of the same year, Antoine leaves the leadership of the Royal Academy of Music. In May 1780, Doverg became Director General of the Royal Academy of Music and held this post until his departure on Easter 1782. [5] On April 1, 1785, he became the head of the Royal Academy of Music for the third time, finally leaving the post on April 6, 1790. [6] .

In 1786, the Dover gains recognition by becoming a holder of the Order of St. Michael .

The most famous works of the Dover are the comic opera Money changers and The Deceived Coquette, which had a great influence on the development of the French comedian opera . In addition to operas and opera ballets, he composed a number of other works, including violin sonatas (1739), trio sonatas, motets , and what the composer himself called symphonic concerts ( Fr. Concerts de Simphonies ; 1751) in four parts. The most famous pupil of the Dover was a harpsichord player and composer Simon Simon .

The trust was married twice. For the first time he married on May 24, 1739 at Marie de Fils ( French: Marie de Filtz ). Widowed, in 1770 he married a second time, to Clemence Roset, who died in June 1787.

In 1793, Antoine Dovergne left Paris, moving to Lyon , where he died 4 years later at the age of 83.
