Geography
The area is located in the central part of Gloucestershire county along the left bank of the River Severn .
History
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 as a result of the unification of the urban areas ( Urban district ) of Nailsworth , Stroud , the rural areas ( English Rural District ) of Dursley , Stroud and parts of the rural areas of Gloucester , Sodbury and Thornbury .
