The following is a list of California state parks ( USA ). There are 87 of them, the largest of them - Anza-Borrego-Desert , covers an area of more than 2371 km², the smallest - , covers an area of 0.656 km²; the oldest, , was founded in 1902, and the youngest, , was founded in 2009. All state parks are managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation . In 2008 [1] –2011 [2] , a proposal was made to close several dozen state parks for financial reasons [3] , but many of them were able to defend their existence.
The list includes only state parks , but not similar conservation areas, such as the State Recreation Area , State Marine Reserve , State Historic Park , State Beach, etc. - in total, there are more than 200 such facilities in California [4] (more than 270 ) [5] .
The main attractions of many California state parks are forests and groves of giant sequoias , which naturally grow only on the coast (not further than 75 km from the ocean) of California (rarely found in southwestern Oregon ).
