Biography
Born in the family of a German officer who served in the Swedish army. Already at the age of 10, he was enrolled to study at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Altdorf . However, he did not finish his studies, went to work at a trading house in Lyon , where he began to learn the secrets of commerce and economics. Later he traveled to many cities in Europe: Geneva , Hamburg , Lübeck , Copenhagen , Moscow , St. Petersburg , Stockholm and Vienna .
The experience gained in traveling allowed him to publish a number of works in the field of economics.
In 1708 he joined the Prussian Scientific Society. In 1724 he was invited to take part in the court economic council in Dresden , Saxony . He served as court counselor to the royal Polish and Saxon courts. He remained in Saxony until the end of his life.
Creativity
P. Marperger is the author of numerous works on the economic, historical, geographical and legal aspects of European trade, the most famous of which are the Moskovichsky merchant (1705, 1723) and the Swedish merchant (1705, 1706).
“The Moscow Merchant” is a kind of encyclopedic work, in the writing of which he used the works of Olearius , P. Jovio , A. Possevino , P. Petrei de Yerlezund , S. Herberstein , A.-G. Schleissinger, D. Prince , A. Meyerberg , J. Fletcher , S. Collins . It provides information about the state structure of Russia, its laws, trade and crafts, money circulation, the largest trading cities, among which Novgorod occupies an important place. The 1723 edition contains information about the privileges gained by the Hanseatic merchants in Russia as a result of the negotiations of the Hanseatic embassy of I. Brambach in 1603 with B. Godunov. Marperger reports that in Novgorod and other cities they were allowed duty-free trade, canceled customs control, registration and penalties.
Versatile author. He also owns books on gardening, botany, medicine, diet, cooking and caring for animals, relations with police and military structures, organizing bookstores, regulations of cities and their economies, about trade fairs and banks, but a third of his writings are more than one hundred titles devoted to issues of commerce.
