Title

The first known name - Cathedral Street - already existed until 1795. In the 19th century, the names Kapitulnaya Square and Cathedral Square were used in parallel. The names are associated with the Latin Cathedral , which since the Middle Ages is located on this square, and with the Roman Catholic Chapter , which operated at the temple. In Soviet times, since 1950, the square was named after Rosa Luxemburg. The historical name was returned in 1991. [one]

Description

The area was formed on the site of the former cemetery, which was located around the Cathedral. The cemetery was surrounded by a wall, and from the gate a staircase led down, since the cemetery was significantly lower than the neighboring Galitskaya street and Rynok square. Single crypt chapels formed dispersed buildings. Of the old tombs, only the “Holy Sepulcher” has been preserved - a sculptural composition that has now been moved under the walls of the cathedral. The chapel-tomb of the Boim family also survived, but it joined the current linear development (a residential building was attached to the south facade). The western line of development is formed by the odd side of Teatralnaya Street (houses number 5, 7, 9). A two-way tram line runs from Berindi Street to the market through the square.

In the 1910s, during a sewer repair, fragments of human skeletons were found, identified as belonging to Lviv patricians. The find was transferred to the Department of Anthropology of the Lviv University . [2] In 2006, archaeologists discovered the remains of the foundation and walls of the Gothic chapel in the northwestern part of the square, during repair work to replace the pavement (the method of laying brick indicates the XIV-XV centuries). The floor is located at a depth of 3.5 m from the current level of the area. [3]
