History

The founder of the museum is Boris Mints (No. 55 on the Forbes-2016 list). Since 2001, she has been collecting Russian painting and graphics - mainly the work of artists from the late XIX - early XX centuries. His collection includes works by Serov , Korovin , Kustodiev , Konchalovsky , Polenov , Pimenov , Gerasimov [1] . On its basis, Mintz created in Moscow a private Museum of Russian Impressionism, for which he built a building on the territory of his former Bolshevik confectionery factory. The construction of the exhibition building at the site of the confectionery raw materials warehouse under the project of the John McAslan + Partners architectural bureau cost $ 16.5 million [2] .

The museum, which opened to the public on May 28, 2016, began operations in 2014, when a series of exhibitions were held in Moscow and the regions of Russia (at the MacDougall's auction house in the spring of 2014, Moscow; in Ivanovo , Venice and Freiburg). For almost 3 years, the joint project with the Foreigner “Painting in the Library” toured several major Russian cities and brought the Museum to the final of the Intermuseum 2016 [3] . In December 2016, he entered the long list of nominees for The Art Newspaper Russia [4] .

Collection

The collection is based on the private collection of Boris Mints, who focused on Russian art of the late XIX - early XX centuries. The earliest painting is 1879, by Vasily Polenov. Many of the paintings in the collection were acquired abroad, thus once again finding themselves at home: “Summer” by Nikolai Bogdanov-Belsky and “Venice” by Boris Kustodiev, two works by Pyotr Konchalovsky and “Mountain Village” by Nikolai Dubovsky . Also in the museum are paintings by Konstantin Korovin, Igor Grabar , Konstantin Yuon , Yuri Pimenov and other artists - previously inaccessible to the general public [3] .

According to the director of the museum, Yulia Petrova: “The term“ Russian impressionism ”is still controversial. Maintaining his affirmation is our most important task ” [5] .

“Composer Dmitry Kurlandsky created five musical stories specifically for the museum based on the main works of the permanent exhibition. On the ground floor, you will see the installation of contemporary American artist Jean-Christophe Cue, dedicated to the process of creating paintings. Using the latest technology, the artist “split” several museum masterpieces into brush strokes ” [6] .

The museum operates a bookstore of Artemy Lebedev Studio "Serovin and Cows" with museum attributes [7] .

Exhibitions

Exhibitions in the museum are dedicated to artists forgotten in their homeland: in the spring of 2016, the building opened with the exhibition Arnold Lakhovsky . The Enchanted Wanderer ” [8] , and in December of that year the museum presented the first personal exhibition in Moscow by Elena Kiseleva [9] . In October 2017, for the first time in 40 years, a retrospective of the painter Mikhail Fedorovich Shemyakin , a student of Serov and Korovin, opened [10] . The painting of the “father of Russian futurism ” David Burliuk from Russian and foreign museum and private collections was combined in the exhibition “David Burliuk. A word to me! ”In the fall of 2018 [11] . The exhibition of the artist Nikolai Meshcherin was prepared in conjunction with the Tretyakov Gallery in February 2019 [12] .
