Biography

Mikhail Sverdlov was born in 1966 in Moscow . In 1984-1986 he served in the Soviet Army [1] .

In 1990 he graduated from the philological faculty of the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute named after V. I. Lenin with a degree in Russian Language and Literature [1] [2] .

In 1990-1994 he studied at the correspondence post-graduate course of the A. Gorky Literary Institute [1] [2] . In 1995, he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of philological sciences at Moscow State Pedagogical University (IPSU) on the theme "The theme of childhood in an English ode of the XVII-XIX centuries" [1] [2] .

In 1991-1995 he worked as a senior lecturer at the Department of Cultural Studies of the Moscow State Pedagogical University. In 2004-2007 he was the editor of the journal Literary Issues . Since 2008 - Associate Professor, Co-Chair of the Department of Philology of the Moscow Institute of Open Education . In 2009–2013 he was preparing the Moscow team for the All-Russian Literature Olympiad [1] . Since 2012 - Associate Professor, Department of Philology, Higher School of Economics , Associate Professor, Faculty of Humanities; in 2014, 2015, 2016 he was recognized as the "best teacher" [1] [2] . Senior researcher at the Department of Literature in Europe and America of the most recent time , Gorky Institute of World Literature, Russian Academy of Sciences [1] .

Research interests: English literature of the 17th – 20th centuries, Russian literature of the 19th – 20th centuries, modern Russian and foreign literature, theory of literature, methods of teaching literature [1] .

One of the authors of the “Encyclopedic Dictionary of English Literature of the 20th Century”, the collective monograph “English Literature of the 19th Century to the 20th, from the 20th to the 19th: Problems of the Interaction of Literary Eras” [1] .

In collaboration with Oleg Lekmanov, he wrote biographies of such writers as Sergei Yesenin , Nikolai Oleinikov and Venedikt Erofeev (the latter also co-authored with Ilya Simanovsky). The book “Venedikt Erofeev: an outsider”, published in 2018 on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the author of the poem “ Moscow-Petushki ”, became the first biography of the writer.
