Scientific activity
The author of over 60 scientific papers, including four monographs.
In 1923, his monograph on malaria and the fight against it was published and helped organize the fight against malaria in the USSR.
He studied tick-borne relapsing fever, mosquito fever and cutaneous leishmaniasis. As a result of self-infection, N.I. Latyshev first established a specific carrier of Central Asian tick-borne relapsing fever, the tick Ornithodoros papillipes, and also discovered a new form of this disease associated with large gerbils (Rhombomys opimus), caused by a special pathogen - Spirochaeta latyschewii (Borrelia latyschewii).
In works on cutaneous leishmaniasis, he proved that this disease is a zoonosis - a disease of large gerbils and some other rodents, from which the pathogen is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes.
In 1938 - for the first time he set an experience in improving the natural focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the desert, based on the simultaneous destruction of large gerbils and mosquitoes that live in their burrows.
