The Ujigami Shrine is dedicated to Emperor Ojin and his sons, Prince Ujinovaki Iratsuko and Emperor Nintok. [4] Ujinovaki Iratsuko committed suicide to resolve the succession dispute, and a temple was built in his honor. [6]

Ujigami honden is known as the oldest example of Nagare-zukuri architecture in Japan. [2] [3] [5] This style involves the construction of three inner shrines side by side, with the central structure being larger. [3] The construction of the honden by ujigami dates from the end of the Heian period (794–1185). [4] [5] Hayden was built in the Shinden Zukuri architecture, and its roof is in the sugaruhafu style. Hayden was built during the Kamakura period (1185 - 1333). The Kasuga Shrine, built within Ujigami, dates from the same period. [4] One of the features of the temple is a spring. [6]

Digital dendrological studies suggest that Ujigami is the oldest Shinto shrine in Japan. The Research Institute for Cultural Property of the city of Nara determined that the temple was built in about 1060, which correlates with preserved written sources. [7]

Until the Meiji period (1868 - 1912), the shrines of Uji and Ujigami were known under the general name Rikyukushisha. [3] The annual Ujigami Shrine Festival is held May 5th. [five]
