The general election in Ghana was held on December 7, 2016 . They elected the president , vice president and members of parliament . [1] The original date of 7 November 2016 [2] was rejected by Parliament. [1] Nana Akufo-Addo from the opposition New Patriotic Party was elected president , defeating President John Dramani Maham of the National Democratic Congress. [3]

The results of the presidential election were announced on December 9, 2016 due to a delay in the counting of votes in two districts. At 7 p.m., President Mahama admitted defeat. An hour later, the Ghana Election Commission declared former Foreign Minister Akufo Addo the winner of the election. He took office on January 7, 2017. [4]

Election System
The President of Ghana is elected by an absolute majority in two rounds of voting. 275 members of parliament are elected in single-mandate constituencies by a relative majority.
A candidate may be a Ghanaian citizen who has reached the age of 21 and has lived in the relevant constituency or has lived in it for at least 5 of the last 10 years.
Citizens of Ghana who have reached the age of 19, with the exception of those declared mentally ill, have the right to vote. [five]
Candidates
A total of 16 applicants announced their desire to run for presidency. However, the Electoral Commission approved only 7 of them. Ivor Green Street was the first person to participate in the presidential election in Ghana. [6]
