Election of the World Cup organizer 1990Applications:
- England
- Greece
- Italy
- Iran
- the USSR
For the first time in history, the USSR and Iran joined the struggle to hold the 14th World Cup. England and Greece withdrew from the race before the vote, which was held for the second time in Zurich on May 19, 1984 , and then refused to Iran, having lost the opportunity to fight for the first holding of the World Cup in Asia. In the final round of voting, the USSR unexpectedly lost to Italy with a score of 11: 5. According to experts, the FIFA decision was dictated by the fact that the USSR had previously boycotted the Olympics in Los Angeles in response to the boycott by the Western countries of the Moscow Olympics . It was the only application from the USSR for the World Cup, the second application for the tournament was submitted by the Russian Federation in 2009.
