History
The company was founded by the Graham brothers Joseph, Robert and Ray Austin on the basis of the Paige automobile company, which was purchased on June 10, 1927 for $ 4 million. The elder brother Joseph becomes the president of the company, the middle, Robert, the vice-president, and the younger - the financial director. The bodies were produced on the basis of the Wayne Body Company ( Wayne Body Company ), also purchased by Graham, the engines were supplied mainly by Continental Motors . Since January 1928, the company was called Graham-Paige. Initially, the production of the “Page” line cars continued, in 1928 production of new models began, differing in the volume of engines and the length of the bases. Three-digit model numbering meant the number of engine cylinders (first digit) and the base length in inches without the first unit (the last two).
Since 1930, the company’s cars have been produced under the name Graham , under the name Paige , the production of trucks, which was curtailed in 1932, was restored, since the trucks were not in demand [1] . In 1940, the company produced only 2859 cars and in September of the same year the plant was closed, equipment was sold, but production was soon restored, the company began to produce motors and trucks for the army. In 1944, Joseph Washington Fraser, a former director of Willis, bought the majority stake and became chairman of the board at Graham-Paige. After the war, automobile production resumes, and on February 5, 1947, the company was bought by Kaiser-Frazer , which, in turn, sold the plant to Chrysler Corporation. After the sale of the automotive division, Graham-Paige continued its real estate business and only in 1962 was renamed Madison Square Garden Corporation .
