History
The leader of the group is Ellie Rowsell, she graduated from the prestigious London school for girls Camden School for Girls [1] . At fourteen, Ellie became fascinated with playing the guitar and singing songs of her own authorship. Initially, Ellie wanted to perform in a group, but her friends did not share her hobbies, and at eighteen she tried to perform alone on the music scene. Soon, assessing this venture as unsuccessful, Ellie decided to create her own musical group.
Ellie Rowsell met like-minded guitarist Joff Oddy, after which they began to rehearse and perform on small scenes as a vocal-guitar duet. In 2010, the duet was transformed into a quartet called “Wolf Alice” (Alice Wolf), which was borrowed from the story of the English writer Angela Carter [2] . Rowsell invited Sadie Cleary [3] as her bass guitarist, and Oddy, her friend George Barlett, to the drums.
In 2012, the band changed, drummer George Barlett broke his wrist, and Joel Amey joined the band as a temporary replacement, but later became a regular member of the team. Bass guitar player Theo Ellis replaced Sadie Cleary, who decided to focus on continuing her education.
The band’s first success was the song “Leaving You”, published for free download on SoundCloud . The song hit the rotation of the British radio station BBC Radio 1 and was marked by the magazine NME in the section dedicated to promising performers. After the release of the song, they conducted a tour with the group Peace , and in January 2013, they performed at prime time on BBC Radio 1 [4] .
In February 2013, Wolf Alice released their first official single, Fluffy, on the Chess Club label [2] . In May of the same year, the band released their second single “Bros” on the Chess Club label. [5] “Bros” is one of the first songs Rowsell wrote, and it is close in style to the band’s early work. After the release of “Bros”, the group conducted a tour where it was supported by teams such as “Dressed Like Wolves” and “Dead New Blood” [6] . In October 2013, Wolf Alice released their first official mini-album (EP) called “Blush” and the official video for the single “Blush” and “She”, in which Henry Salt took part.
In 2014, Wolf Alice signed a contract with the label Dirty Hit Records, and in May released their second mini-album (EP) “Creature Songs”. In December of the same year, the group was awarded the UK Festival Awards in the nomination "Best Breakthrough Artist" (Best Musical Breakthrough) [7]
In early 2015, Wolf Alice announced the release of their debut album “My Love Is Cool”, produced by Mike Crossy [8] , having in its track record of cooperation with such successful indie rock bands as the Arctic Monkeys , Foals , The 1975 . At the end of February, Wolf Alice released a single from the album “Giant Peach” [9] , and in June “You're a Germ”.
In December 2015, iTunes awarded Wolf Alice the “Best New Artist / Band” award (Best New Artist / Team) [10]
In February 2016, Wolf Alice became candidates for the six NME Awards awards in the nominations - "Best British Band", "Best Live Band", "Best Fan Community", "Best Album" (My Love Is Cool), "Best Track" (Giant Peach), “Best Music Video” (You're a Germ).
