History

The migration of Russians to the territory of Mozambique during the colonial period was not widespread and began only after this country gained independence on June 25, 1975 . After more than 200 thousand Portuguese left the country, Mozambique needed qualified personnel. Help in solving this problem was provided by the USSR . By the end of 1980, more than 1,500 citizens of the USSR lived in Mozambique, including teachers, doctors, geologists, gas workers and pilots. After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, just over 40 teachers and doctors remained in Mozambique. Mozambique students during their studies in Russia entered into marriages with Russian women, and some of them took their wives home.

By the beginning of the 2000s, the Russian diaspora in Mozambique had finally formed and adapted to local conditions. Basically, the diaspora consists of doctors, teachers and women who have married Mozambicans, you can also meet Russian entrepreneurs. According to the Russian Embassy in Mozambique, 250 Russians are currently permanently residing in the country [1] .
