Biography

Born in Winnfield, Louisiana . He studied at the University of Washington and Columbia , was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford . From 1968 to 1970 he served as a poetry consultant at the Library of Congress . Member of the American Academy and the Institute of Arts and Literature since 1975 . The author of ten collections of poems, two of which were nominated for a national award. For poetry translations received awards from the French and Swedish academies and the Hungarian government. Translated Russian poetry. In 1981, he taught at the Moscow State University at the Faculty of Journalism. He lived in France and the USA , a former professor of English.

During the war ( 1941 - 1945 ) he served in the U.S. Navy .
