Biography

He was born on July 20, 1877 in the village of Lekmortovskaya (now Lekmartovo) of the Cherdynsky district of the Perm province in an Old Believer family. At the age of seven, his mother died, the boy lived with his father and stepmother.

Having received home primary education, at an early age he began to help the family in the peasant economy. In October 1898 he was drafted into the Russian Imperial Army and enlisted in the 15th naval crew in Kronstadt . For four months he studied naval affairs and continued his service in the White Sea . Then Yaroslavtsev was sent to the United States , where a first-class armored cruiser of the 1st Pacific Fleet of the Russian Navy , the Varyag , was built in Philadelphia. After the cruiser was launched in 1899, Ivan served on it for four years in Port Arthur . At first he was a combat sailor , then a bugler . From Port Arthur, the "Varangian" was sent to Chemulpo Bay ( Korea ), where he assumed the functions of a senior inpatient. Before the start of the Russo-Japanese War , on January 26, 1904, according to the old style, a Japanese squadron arrived at the bay, blocked the path of the Russian ships and fired on the gunboat " Koreets ", which went to Port Arthur with mail. The next day, a war was declared and hostilities between Japan and Russia began. In the battle of Chemulpo , according to the staffing table, Yaroslavtsev helped load the guns. Three comrades, Ivan and one more sailor, were wounded by a shell bursting next to him (Yaroslavtseva was interrupted by a fragment of her left hand). As you know, in this battle the “Varangian” was sunk by Russian sailors, the “Korean” was blown up. Ivan Yaroslavtsev returned to Russia, where he was awarded the medal “For the battle of the Varyag and the Korean,” and the Insignia of the Military Order of St. George IV degree No. 97534.

He continued his military service in Sevastopol on the Black Sea squadron battleship Chesma .

December 3, 1905 he returned to his homeland. He married and for a long time worked with his wife in logging. After the October Revolution , when collective farms began to organize, they entered it. He guarded warehouses with grain, for his work during the Great Patriotic War he was awarded the medal "For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War." During the war, two sons of four children of his family died.

Yaroslavtsev first told the director of the Cherdynsky Museum I. A. Lunegov [1] about his service at the legendary Varyag in 1947, showing his documents and awards. He explained his long silence about those events by the fact that when silver and gold were confiscated in the USSR in 1924-1925, he was afraid that his awards, consisting of silver, would be taken away. [2] In 1947, Ivan Fedorovich moved to live in the village of Pokcha, Cherdynsky District, Perm Region, with his son Zotey. In 1954, he participated in the celebrations dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the heroic feat of the cruiser "Varyag" and was awarded the medal "For Courage", like all members of the cruiser team alive at that time.
