Botanical Description

Flowering plant

Stem - root perennial herb , monocarp , root penetrates into the depth of 2 m or more. The stem is single, erect, 40-170 cm tall, branched in the upper part, ribbed, bare, closer to the apex - often with soft pubescence.

Basal leaves are petiolate, petioles are notched on the upper side, pubescent. Their plates are triangular or oblong-ovate in shape, 20-30 cm long and 5-15 cm wide, once three times pinnate, bluish on the lower side, pubescent along the veins, lobes of the first order short-rooted or sessile, the smallest lanceolate, wide lanceolate oval and lanceolate, usually pointed. Stem leaves are pinnate, on petioles, with bare non-swollen vaginas.

Umbrellas are corymbose, 5–12 cm in diameter, with 30–70 pubescent rays. The wrapper is absent or from several (up to 10-15) whole narrow-lanceolate leaves. Umbrellas are 8-12 mm in diameter, of 30-60 flowers. Wrappers of 10-15 leaves linear or awl-shaped, rough, solid. Calyx with pubescent ovate teeth. The corolla is white, pubescent on the outside, lilac in the buds.

Ovipers 3–4.5 mm long, 1-2 mm wide, elliptical, flattened, mericarpia from the dorsal side with five ribs. The surface of the mericarpids is opaque, pubescent, rarely glabrous. The troughs are red-brown, the ribs are straw-brown.

Distribution

Eurasian species, found throughout Europe, in Siberia, the Caucasus, Asia Minor, in the east - to Lake Baikal and Northern China. Included in the Red Books of the Arkhangelsk and Vologda Regions.

It is found in flood meadows, in the steppes, on roads, on slopes, on limestone exits, on roads and in wastelands.

Value

Young shoots and leaves are eaten by cattle, but the stems of adult plants are coarse. Used in folk medicine. Honey plant. An essential oil plant that produces geraniol . Stems and leaves contain 0.57-0.7% of essential oil, saponins , flavonols , coumarins .

Taxonomy

Seseli intermedium ( Rupr. ) Vodop sometimes stands out as an independent subspecies or species . [= Seseli libanotis subsp. intermedium (Rupr.) PWBall ] - Intermediate cutter , characterized by single or double cirrus lower leaves, their lobes are ovate, uneven or cirrus dissected, dull or blunt. In the nominative subspecies, the lower leaves are twice or thrice pinnate, their lobes are linear, oblong or lanceolate, often sickle-curved, sharp.
