Hydraulic fracturing simulator ( hydraulic fracturing simulator) is an industrial software for mathematical modeling and analysis of the process of creating fractures during hydraulic fracturing .
The hydraulic fracturing simulator is designed to solve a number of applied problems associated with modeling the propagation of hydraulic fractures in the reservoir , taking into account the geological structure of the reservoir, the geomechanical properties of the constituent rocks, the dynamics of the flow of the fracturing fluid and proppant transport. Fracturing modeling software is used in the oil and gas industry in the planning, control and analysis of hydraulic fracturing technology.
The main functions of hydraulic fracturing simulators:
- Formation of a planned or analysis of the actual design of the hydraulic fracturing operation:
- construction of a geomechanical and filtration model of the reservoir taking into account GIS data
- formation of a step-by-step injection plan: injection flow rate, volumes of fracturing fluid, proppant and chemical reagent concentrations
- calculation of the technological regime of hydraulic fracturing (wellhead pressure, bottomhole pressure, hydraulics in the wellbore)
- calculation and visualization of the dynamics of the geometrical dimensions of the fracture during the production of hydraulic fracturing
- calculation and visualization of proppant flow in a fracture during hydraulic fracturing
- calculation and visualization of fixed fracture geometry after proppant crack closure
- calculation of the reservoir properties of a fixed hydraulic fracture and well productivity growth from hydraulic fracturing
- Analysis of test injections before the main hydraulic fracturing operation (mini-hydraulic fracturing, tests with stepwise change of injection flow rate, analysis of the drop curve after injection to estimate reservoir pressure)
- Import and visualization of the actual parameters of the fracturing operation
- Database of properties of fracturing fluids and proppants
- The calculation of the technical and economic efficiency of hydraulic fracturing operations
The most widespread on the world and Russian market [1] [2] are several software products: MFrac [3] , FRACPRO [4] , FracCADE [5] , StimPlan [6] , GOHFER [7] , Kinetix [8] .
Domestic hydraulic fracturing simulators that allow solving production problems are under development by a number of companies [9] [10] [11] .
In particular, in October 2017, NK Rosneft PJSC announced the creation and implementation in trial operation of its own industrial simulator of hydraulic fracturing RN-GRID, based on the Planar3D model and allowing replacing Western analogues that fell under sectoral sanctions [12] [13] .
In May 2018, PJSC NK Rosneft announced the successful implementation of its own industrial simulator of hydraulic fracturing RN-GRID in a subsidiary service company LLC RN-hydraulic fracturing and complete import substitution of software for hydraulic fracturing modeling [14] [15] [16] [ 17] .
