History
In order to eliminate the shortcomings noted in the SU-76 during operation, in the summer of 1943 the design bureaus of GAZ and Plant No. 38 proposed independent SU-76 modernization projects. Plant number 38 offered several options: SU-15, SU-16 and SU-38. SU-16 was developed under the leadership of M.N. Shchukin . In June 1943, a prototype vehicle was tested jointly with the SU-15 at the Gorokhovets artillery range . According to the test results, it was found that the SU-16 in terms of the total performance characteristics turned out to be the most successful, however, it had an unsuccessful crew location, which is why it did not go into production. Later, the SU-16 along with the SU-38 was disassembled. [2] [3] [4]
Description
The SU-16, like all other versions of the SU-76 modification from the design bureau of Plant No. 38, was armed with a 76.2 mm S-15 gun, and the GAZ-203 was chosen as the engine. In its layout scheme, she repeated the SU-76 . The transmission and chassis for the SU-16 was borrowed from the T-70 , the combat compartment in this self-propelled guns was located on top. The changes affected only the air cleaning system and the fighting compartment, which was slightly increased. [2] [4]
