Ras Laffan ( Arabic: رأس لفان , English; Ras Laffan Industrial City ) is one of Qatar 's three largest industrial centers (along with Mesayyid and Duhan ). Located 80 km northeast of Doha .

The main production facilities are directed to the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG), the conversion of natural gas to liquid motor fuel ( GLC technology ), and the production of related products. It is managed by the state-owned company Qatar Petroleum [1] .

Project development began in 1991. The construction of the first LNG plant began in 1994; it produced its first products at the end of 1996 [3] .
As of 2016, Qatargas , RasGas , Dolphin Energy, Oryx GTL , Pearl GTL and others are operating in Ras Laffan.
To provide the personnel serving the production with water, it was necessary to build powerful desalination plants [4] .
Port
The construction of the port, intended for the export of liquefied natural gas, gas condensate and sulfur, began in the first quarter of 1992. Two breakwaters were built: the north - 6 km long, and the south - about 5 km. Dredging was also carried out.
Design and construction were carried out by a joint Qatari-Spanish company Condotte Qatar together with the Italian company Grandi Lavori Fincosit.
The first stage of the pier was built in 1996, and in 1997 the construction was completed.
The port has four loading berths with a total capacity of 30 million tons
Two 300-meter dry cargo container terminals were also built, each of which can accept vessels with a deadweight of up to 45,000 tons, a 150-meter berth for heavy loads, with a 35-meter-wide ro-ro ramp, and a berth 270 m long for four tugboats, as well as for pilot boats.
Moreover, there are two bulk berths capable of accepting ships with a deadweight of up to 300,000 tons in a partially loaded state, and a 420-meter berth for offshore drilling platforms [5] .
Shipyard
In 2010, the joint venture Nakilat and Damen Group was formed - Nakilat Damen Shipyards Qatar (NDSQ) [6] . This company operates the Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma Shipyard, located near Ras Laffan. The shipyard covers an area of about 15 hectares and is intended for the repair and construction of marine vessels. The first ship, a barge 160 meters long, was built in 2012 [7] . As of 2016, the shipyard has built more than forty vessels [8] .
